My Story
Where I've been
My academic journey really began when I took up writing A Levels. Over two years, I got exposed to two sides of life — the scientific, factual side as well as the psychological "people" side. Studying Mathematics and Physics gave me the necessary skills to examine complex problems, try and test solutions, and evaluate how successful my implementations were. Economics and Psychology gave me the tools to look at human behavior and patterns through a lens where every action had a reasonable explanation. Together these four subjects have instilled in me a curiosity to look for the patterns and repetitions in an ever-changing world full of sporadic human decisions and chaos everywhere you look.
Mining exposure
In 2024 I spent a month working with the CTO helping with production data and automations, and sat in many meetings with equipment companies which opened my eyes to the many complex issues facing a large business, and how accurate information is the key to all decision making. I later wrote a research paper for the Cambridge IPQ about using machine learning to model the diesel consumption of mining haul trucks. Achieving an A* for this paper, I pitched the possibility of working on their team before university and my request was approved. Having spent nearly 5 months on the commercial team so far, I have dealt with many challenges, solved numerous problems and pitched a few of my own improvement ideas — some of which have been accepted and implemented. Mining is an industry that has taught me how every layer, from basic resource extraction all the way to sale and shipment of the final product, interacts — and the challenges that arise when one link of the chain breaks.
